Mini PC Power Consumption for Home Labs
A home-lab mini PC runs 24/7. Idle and light-load watts decide the power bill, not the 15–45 W TDP printed on a product box. TDP is a thermal design number. It is not what the brick pulls at the wall while Pi-hole and a reverse proxy sit idle.
What to look up
- Idle at the wall. Prefer reviews that use a kill-a-watt or similar, with the OS booted and disks spun up.
- Same RAM and storage. A 32GB / 1TB kit is not the same draw as a 16GB / 256GB kit.
- NIC and USB devices. A 2.5GbE dongle, a USB SSD, or a powered hub changes the number.
- Display output. Headless idle is lower than a 4K desktop session.
N-series vs Ryzen, in practice

Buyer mistakes
- Comparing TDP stickers as if they were idle watts.
- Assuming a new N150 is always lower-watt than a used Tiny.
- Ignoring the PSU brick — a cheap 19 V adapter can waste more than the PC.
